It infects the upper (nose\u00a0 and\u00a0 throat)\u00a0 or\u00a0 the\u00a0 lower\u00a0 respiratory\u00a0 system\u00a0 (lungs)\u00a0 and\u00a0 is\u00a0 accompanied\u00a0by symptoms such\u00a0as\u00a0a sudden\u00a0 onset\u00a0 of\u00a0 high\u00a0 fever,\u00a0 headache,\u00a0 and\u00a0 muscular\u00a0 weakness.\u00a0 The virus\u00a0 is\u00a0 highly\u00a0 contagious,\u00a0 and\u00a0 it\u00a0 is\u00a0 more\u00a0 likely\u00a0 to\u00a0 develop\u00a0 complications\u00a0 in the elderly, children, or people with certain chronic medical conditions, and the mortality rate is also high.<\/p>\n<p>There are three types of influenza virus (A, B and C), but it is mainly type A and B that cause illness in humans.\u00a0 Influenza\u00a0 A\u00a0 viruses\u00a0 are\u00a0 labeled\u00a0 according\u00a0 to\u00a0 H (hemagglutinin)\u00a0 and\u00a0 N\u00a0 (neuraminidase)\u00a0 antigens.\u00a0 HI, H2, H3, H5 and\u00a0 N1\u00a0 and\u00a0 N2 antigens are common causes of illness in humans. More accurate results can be obtained if samples are collected from several parts.<\/li>\n<li>Specimen should be tested as soon as possible upon collection. If the sample has to be stored, store the swab sample at 2~8\u00b0C up to 12 hours or at -20\u00b0C or below up to 24 hours. <strong>(1)\u00a0<\/strong>Nasal swab specimen. To collect nasal swab specimen, gently insert a sterilized swab into the nasal cavity. Rotate softly and withdraw the swab. Make sure the tip of the swab is wet.\u00a0Collecting the sample from both nostrils will increase the sensitivity of the assay.\u00a0<strong>(2)\u00a0<\/strong>Nasopharyngeal swab specimen.\u00a0To collect nasopharyngeal specimen, gently insert a nasopharyngeal exclusive swab (not\u00a0 provided)\u00a0 into\u00a0 the\u00a0 nasal\u00a0 cavity\u00a0 until\u00a0 the\u00a0 resistance\u00a0 is\u00a0 met.\u00a0 Rotate softly and withdraw the\u00a0swab.\u00a0 Make sure the tip of the swab is wet.\u00a0Collecting the\u00a0sample from both nostrils will increase the sensitivity of the assay.\u00a0<strong>(3)<\/strong>\u00a0Throat swab specimen.
